Xubuntu – community-maintained derivative of Ubuntu

Xubuntu is an elegant and easy to use operating system derived from Ubuntu.

Xubuntu comes with Xfce, which is a stable, light and configurable desktop environment.

Applications that are preinstalled include a web browser, a mail client, word processor, spreadsheet editor, applications to handle your media like music, videos and photos as well as many useful tools. The Ubuntu Software Center lets you install additional apps.

Minimum system requirements:

Intel or AMD 64-bit processor with at least 1 GB of memory. When you install Xubuntu, you need at minimum 8.6 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Recommended system requirements:

1.5Ghz Dual Core processor with at least 2 GB of memory and 20GB of free disk space.

What's a Linux distribution ("distro")?

A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system.

Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies.

Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros.
