Bitbucket is a Git and Mercurial based source code management and collaboration solution in the cloud.
The software is written in Python using the Django web framework.
Bitbucket provides Git and Mercurial code management for professional teams. Their main market is large enterprises. While there is a GUI client available, there are no plans to produce a native Linux version. Instead the GUI is only supported on Windows and Mac.
Bitbucket was launched in 2008 by an Australian startup, originally only supporting Mercurial projects.
Features include:
- Simple to set up and use even for teams new to Git or Mercurial.
- Pull requests, commit histories, and code reviews.
- Branch permissions provide granular access control for your team, ensuring the right people can make the right changes to your code.
- 2 step verification and required two step verification.
- Hold discussions right in the source code with inline comments.
- Good user interface and tools.
- Semantic search that ranks definitions first.
- Issue tracking.
- Wikis.
- Web hosting.
- Binary downloads.
- Free public repositories.
- Unlimited private repositories.

- Trello’s boards, lists and cards enable you to organize, prioritize and collaborate on your projects in a fast, flexible way.
- Integrated CI/CD for Bitbucket Cloud
- Smart mirroring.
- 3rd party integrations.
- Show build results from your CI system.
- Good integration with JIRA, a project and issue-managing app also developed by Atlassian. Crucible, Jenkins and Bamboo are also integrated.

Bitbucket restricts you to work with only 5 people for free. For more people, there are commercial plans available.
