Mahara – fully-featured web application to build your electronic portfolio

Mahara is a fully featured open source electronic portfolio, weblog, resume builder and social networking system, connecting users and creating online communities. An ePortfolio is a system in which students can record “evidence of lifelong learning” – such as essays, artwork or other such things they produce that can be stored digitally.

Mahara is designed to provide users with the tools to create a personal and professional learning and development environment.

Mahara content management system provides users with blogs, a resume builder, a file manager and a view creator – a tool to help users create arrangements of their content in a particular way for others to see. Mahara is built using PHP web scripting language and leverages PHP5’s OO features.

Features include:

  • Control which items and what information (Artefacts) within your portfolio other users see.
  • Blogging – comprehensive blogging tool is provided in Mahara, where blogs and blog postings are considered Artefacts and may be added to a View.
  • Social networking facility where users can create and maintain a list of Friends within the system.
  • Resume builder.
  • Moodle native integration to provide a streamlined user experience allowing true single-signon between both systems – no password sharing required, and users’ profile information is ported across.
  • Open, pluggable system. Mahara ships with plugins for profile information, a file repository, blogs and a resume builder.
  • Themes using an inheritance-based theming system.
  • Supports the Leap2A specification for importing and exporting data, and static HTML export.
