We’ve defined an eligibility criteria to guide us when selecting apps for this series. See the bottom of this article for details.
WhatsApp Messenger (WhatsApp) probably needs little introduction as its so ubiquitous.
It’s a hugely popular cross-platform messaging application for mobile devices with more than 1 billion users.
Messages sent via the app are encrypted. An internet connection is needed, either via mobile data or a Wi-Fi signal. Instead of paying per SMS message, the tool lets you engage with others at no charge per message (assuming you’re within your data allowance when using mobile data).
WhatsApp uses a system of ticks to indicate different statuses of messages you send. The ticks will be visible at the bottom right hand corner of the message speech bubble, next to the time stamp. One grey tick means that the message has been sent successfully. Two grey ticks means that the message has been delivered successfully to the recipient’s phone. If the two ticks turn blue, that means that the message has been read.
WhatsApp works with your phone number, just like SMS, and integrates with your phone’s existing address book.
With group chats, you can share messages, photos, and videos with up to 256 people at once. You can also name your group, mute or customize notifications, and more. It’s an excellent resource for planning activities and events, or keeping up-to-date with friends and family members. You can even give different groups different names to keep all your important contacts separate.
WhatsApp is also available on the desktop and web. This lets you sync all of your chats to your computer so that you can chat on multiple devices.
