Byte

Byte – music player designed for elementary OS

Last Updated on September 3, 2020

Summary

I am pleasantly surprised by Byte. It offers a very clean and simple way to access your music collection, and it’s an impressive internet radio player. As things stand, it won’t be replacing my favourite music players (musikcube on the console and Tauon Music Player on the desktop), but there’s a lot I admire.

There’s lots of niceties I’d like added. Things like the ability to show and use existing cover art, last.fm integration, better support for albums with multiple discs, tag editor, and support for lyrics would be excellent additions.

Byte isn’t the most stable program. The program is prone to crashing when adding a large number of tracks. And it’s even more unstable performing any action when that process is ongoing. Best let the program add all the tracks, before trying to use the software.

Byte is rather CPU intensive compared to many other music players.
