Summary
Fraidycat is much more useful in today’s internet than a regular news aggregator. It offers a less distracting way of surfing the web, it’s excellent for handling sites that don’t support RSS, and it’s a big time saver. We find we keep less browser tabs open, so there are significant memory savings on offer.
Never judge a computer program by its name or logo. Fraidycat is a risible name, and its logo is just as egregious. But don’t let that put you off.
The web extension is awarded a big thumbs up from LinuxLinks! It didn’t have any deleterious impact on the load on our test systems.
One of the issues is that there are so many different services available, it’s quite a task to support them all. The developer is working on supporting other services including Facebook, Twitch, and Songkick.
The project also develops a standalone program, written in Electron. It’s a big memory hog, and inferior to the web extension as there’s no support for syncing between machines. We recommend you avoid the standalone program, and stick to the web extension.
