fSpy is a cross platform app for quick and easy still image camera matching.
Camera matching, or camera calibration, is the process of estimating camera parameters from certain features in an image. fSpy computes the approximate focal length, orientation and position of the camera in 3D space based on user defined control points in still images. The computed camera parameters can be used in other apps, for example 3D modeling tools.
fSpy uses the position of vanishing points to estimate camera parameters. A vanishing point is specified using two line segments aligned with features in the image that correspond to parallel lines in 3D space. The image below shows two such segments and the corresponding vanishing point, indicated as the intersection of the two thinner lines.
Camera parameters computed by fSpy could be used in any application that has a notion of a 3D camera and provides some way of setting the camera parameters.
fSpy only works with perspective images resulting from some pinhole camera like process. Suitable images include:
- photos taken with regular (near) distortion-free lenses.
- 3D images rendered with a perspective camera.
The following types of images will not work well with fSpy:
- Photos taken with lenses with severe distortion, e.g. fisheye lenses.
- Images where the perspective has been tampered with, e.g. through perspective control.
- 3D images rendered with an orthographic camera.
- Stitched panorama images.
fSpy is written in Typescript using Electron, React, and Redux.
