Gerris Flow Solver – solution of the partial differential equations describing fluid flow

Gerris is a tool for generic numerical simulations of flows (CFD), in geometrically complex geometries and including adaptive, multiphase and interfacial flows capabilities.

It can deal with arbitrarily complex solid boundaries in an automatic manner and uses dynamic adaptive mesh refinement to optimize the discretisation according to the flow solution.

Gerris uses an “embedded boundary” technique. Grid generation reduces to the computation of the “shape” (surface and volume fractions) of Cartesian (cubic) cells cut by the solid boundaries.

The software is supported by NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric research) and by the and Institut Jean le Rond d’Alembert.

Features include:

  • Solves the time-dependent incompressible variable-density Euler, Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations.
  • Adaptive mesh refinement: the resolution is adapted dynamically to the features of the flow.
  • Entirely automatic mesh generation in complex geometries.
  • Quadtree-based (Octree in 3D) spatial discretisation with automatic (and possibly dynamic) local refinement.
  • Unlimited number of advected/diffused passive tracers.
  • Multigrid Poisson solver.
  • Second-order Godunov type advection scheme.
  • Solves the time-dependent incompressible Euler equations.
  • Solves the shallow-water (Saint-Venant) equations.
  • Support for complex solid boundaries (automatic locally-refined mesh generation).
  • Flexible object-oriented specification of boundary conditions.
  • Portable parallel support using the MPI library.
  • Flexible specification of additional source terms.
  • Accurate surface tension model.
  • Multiphase electrohydrodynamics.
