Online videos
Haruna can play online videos thanks to its built-in support for youtube-dl.
youtube-dl is a cross-platform, open source, command-line program to download videos. Its name belies the fact it supports tons of streaming sites besides YouTube.
Haruna’s functionality in this area is very limited. You need to enter a URL to stream a video, but without any integrated search you’ll still be stuck using a web browser.
By default, the software will stream the best quality video and audio stream, but it’s also possible to stream a specific resolution (where available). However, sometimes you might want to specify a specific stream for playback. For example, your GPU may only offer hardware acceleration for H.264 video. There’s no way of forcing Haruna to play a stream using a specific codec.
Tartube is the best GUI for YouTube (and other sites) we’ve found. It offers a good range of features, highly configurable, has internationalization support, and even lets you access a media library with integrated search.
