Summary
There’s a lot to like about mpdevil. It offers a pleasant and intuitive frontend to MPD. It displays large covers, there’s support for MPRIS, you can filter by genre, and much more. And because it’s a front-end to MPD, important features like gapless playback are automatically supported.
Providing your music collection has perfectly groomed music tags, the program functions admirably. It doesn’t have the polish of our favorite MPD frontends. And for anyone who doesn’t have a model collection from a tag perspective, we cannot recommend mpdevil given the lack of a directory browser. Most MPD frontends offer that functionality, and without it, the program is largely unusable. The developer has confirmed that there are no plans to implement a directory browser.
Memory usage is modest. The program uses around 55MB of RAM when playing music. Factor in an additional 26MB of RAM for the MPD process, and you still have a frugal music player from a systems requirement perspective.
