Quake III Arena or Quake 3, abbreviated as Q3A or Q3, is a multiplayer first-person shooter game.
Quake III Arena is the third title in the series and differs from the previous games in the Quake series in that it excludes the normal single-player element, instead focusing on multiplayer action. The solo experience in Q3 is arena combat versus AI opponents, in a similar style to Unreal Tournament.
As with most multiplayer first-person shooters, the player moves throughout the arena fragging (killing) enemy players and scoring points based on the objective of the game mode.
id Software released the complete source code for Quake III Arena under the GNU General Public License, as they have done for most of their earlier engines. However, the textures and other data were not released.
It features a completely rebuilt game engine that adds gorgeous 3-D arenas to “frag” your opponents within, plus all new weapons and character models.
Features include:
- Cutting-edge graphics.
- 26 maps.
- Dozens of highly detailed player models.
- Beautiful level architecture.
- Game Modes:
- Deathmatch.
- Team deathmatch.
- Capture the Flag.
- Tournament.
- Ability to heavily modify the game.
- Single player with advanced AI bots, with different difficulty levels. Two modes of single player competition: Skirmish and Tournament modes.
- Specially designed for multiplayer, using a client-server architecture.
