You may have noticed we are beavering away updating our recommended free and open source software. I want to share our plans with our community.
We are snowballing the number of updates published every month. For example, we’ve identified about 150 roundups that are at least 3 years old. We plan on updating all of them before the year end. For each update, we evaluate the available free and open source software and make recommendations based on expert opinion. The intention is not to mention all available software, but to focus on what we consider to be the best available.
Once this work is complete, we will then move on to assessing the hundreds of other roundups we have published and identify which of them need urgent updates. Open source developers are particularly active in many fields, so we will prioritize updates to those areas.
Rest assured, our focus on this work will not affect our other sections. For example, we will increase the number of reviews we publish on interesting software and hardware each month.
