Revisited: MusicPod – music, podcast and internet radio player

Internet Radio

When we last looked at MusicPod, its internet radio functionality was extremely limited. Things have come along in leaps and bounds. There’s now access to a music database which offers a great range of stations.

There’s a search functionality that lets you find stations which can be marked as favourites. We’ve added a few stations in the image below.

There’s a hearing history which shows what you’ve recently listened to. And even more useful, click an entry in the history, and you can perform a YouTube Music search, Spotify search, Apple Music search, Amazon Music search, or an Amazon search on an entry.

The search functionality lets you search by name, tag, country, or language. There’s still room for improvement here as we’d like to combine searches.

Like any good internet radio player, the software pulls in artwork.

Whilst it seems this is a slick and functional application – it really fall down for me in at least two respects.

Mostly, with Radio, it dumbs down the interface – not allowing access to basic information wit radio stations instead reduced to an icon, with no information whether it’s coming via an mp3, an aac, or an opus stream… which is vital for choosing between similar stations.

For this reason, the web search of radio-browser remains a far superior tool for the job allowing you to copy the feed link and paste into some other app.

Basically ANY player that can handle m3u for me, as I keep my stations listed in a simple m3u playlist (opens with Audacious, for example, or Strawberry – which then pulls down artwork, lyrics, and other information).
