Shadow Daemon is a collection of open source tools to detect, record and prevent attacks on web applications. In other words, Shadow Daemon is a web application firewall that intercepts requests and filters out malicious parameters.
Shadow Daemon is a modular system that separates web application, analysis and interface to increase security, flexibility and expandability. The software intercepts requests at application level, not protocol level.
It supports applications that are written in PHP, Perl, and Python.
Features include:
- Protection of web applications by analyzing and filtering user input.
- Coverage of all common web languages with a single solution.
- Connectors – a connector is a small module that connects a web application with a shadowd server. There are connectors provided for PHP, Perl, and Python programing languages.
- Simple, secure and auditable modules.
- Detects SQL injections, XML injections, code injections, command injections, cross-site scripting, local/remote file inclusions, backdoor access and more.
- Targets vulnerabilities in general.
- Three combined methods to identify malicious requests:
- Blacklist algorithm – uses regular expressions to identify known attack patterns.
- Whitelist algorithm – compares user input to rules that specify how the input should appear.
- Integrity algorithm – compares cryptographically secure checksums of the executed script to rules that specify what the checksums should be.
- Filters out the dangerous part of a request. This helps to ensure that benign visitors’ activities are not affected.
- Passive security system.
- As well as a WAF, Shadow Daemon can also be deployed as a high interaction honeypot. Honeypots offer a powerful and informative method to learn about intruders’ presence and methods. They contribute towards a security program that incorporates deception.
- Integrated demo system.
- Native flood protection.
- Supported programming languages:
- PHP
- Perl
- CGI
- Mojolicious
- Mojolicious::Lite
- Python
- CGI
- Django
- Werkzeug
- Flask
