Package Center
The Package Center is one of the real gems of DSM. It offers access to a very large catalogue of Synology and third-party apps which extend the functionality of the NAS in so many different ways.
For example, installing software lets you use the NAS as a multimedia server, a backup server, an IP camera surveillance center, a cloud server, and much more.
There are so many useful packages available to install, it’s impossible to look at them in any detail within the scope of this article. But I’m going to be exploring some the packages in detail in future articles in this series. One of the nice touches of Package Center is where a package has dependencies (i.e. software it needs to use), the dependencies are installed for you. This makes it similar to how any good Linux package manager works.
Particularly interesting packages for home users are Hyper Backup and Container Manager, the latter is a lightweight virtualization application that lets you run thousands of containers. It has a built-in image repository, Docker Hub, to help find the applications. DSM 7.2.1 has made it easier to use these containers.
