Operating System & Software
There is a fairly vanilla version of Android 4.2 installed on the Hudl without it being overly burdened with applications and widgets installed by Tesco. There have been a number of tweaks and customizations made including:
[T] in the left hand corner of the Android toolbar. It provides an access point to various Tesco services. Unfortunately, the [T] can only be removed by rooting the device.
Widgets on the background: Getting started, Tesco Clubcard, Tesco Groceries, Tesco Direct, and Blinkbox. All of these widgets can be removed easily by dragging them to the trash can.
Apps that have been pre-installed:
- Blinkbox Movies – a subscription-free iTunes competitor
- Blinkbox Music – a free-to-use Spotify rival
- Clubcard TV – a free streaming movie and TV service which is full of old shows
- Tesco Groceries – a quick and easy way to shop on your tablet
- Store Locator – find local Tesco stores
- Tesco account manager
- Tesco Clubcard
- Tesco Direct – browse and purchase goods
- Tesco World
Fortunately, the apps and widgets can be easily uninstalled, which is strongly recommended as they are mostly pointless. Blinkbox Movies is no match for Netflix or LOVEFiLM, and Blinkbox Music lags far behind the awesome Spotify.
Hudl uses the Google Chrome as its default web browser. The tablet’s Android 4.2.2 mobile operating system runs well, and it is easy to customise and personalise the tablet.
