What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? |
A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. |
Hi, I recently installed VX Linux on my HP2000 laptop. I have been looking for a distro that would let me extend the useful life of this device with KDE-Plasma destop and applications and VX looks promising! I especially appreciate the X11 support, but I have one (slightly embarassing) problem; when I open the system settings module to configure settings, there is no frame or toolbar visible on the desktop and I can’t figure out how to exit the application! I thought maybe the screen resolution was wrong, but that control is missing from the settings available, and the window settings don’t seem to affect the problem. I’ve updated the system but perhaps there is a package missing? Any suggestions would be welcome!
