HP ProBook 440 G8 Laptop running Linux: Introduction to the Series

This is a blog looking at a refurbished HP ProBook 440 G8 Laptop running Linux. Refurbished laptops can offer a great solution to your Linux computing requirements. They can be a good way to pick up a portable PC on the cheap depending on the brand of the laptop.

The HP ProBook 440 G8 Laptop was supplied by Refurbished Laptops, a popular retailer of refurbished laptops and accessories such as hard drives, keyboards, solid state drives, and more. They provide a year warranty for their refurbished laptops.

I want to see how the laptop runs under Linux with a variety of different distributions. Before embarking on the Linux adventures, I’ll focus on the condition of the laptop I received.

Like most ex-corporate laptops, the HP ProBook 440 G8 was sold in a variety of configurations with different processors, display resolutions, disk sizes, and other variations. My laptop has the following configuration:

Processor: Intel Core i5-1135G7
Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7
Display: 14″ 1920×1080
Memory: 16GB
Internal Storage: 256GB

The refurb laptop sells for £279.00. It comes with a charger. Windows 11 Professional is pre-installed, but naturally I’m only testing the laptop under Linux.

Design

First impressions. This is a robust laptop The materials consist mainly of aluminum and plastic. These materials ensure good stability. It’s a modern looking laptop with narrow bezels and a decent opening angle. The hinges are of good construction with no noticeable wobbling.

Laptop running Manjaro
I’ve installed Manjaro on the laptop. Pictured is the KDE Plasma deskop environment

Noisy computers should be a thing of the past. During general usage, the laptop is mostly silent. Under load, the fan noise is very quiet.

On the left side of the laptop hosts a Kensington lock, a 1G ethernet port, and 1 x USB-A 3.1 Gen 1.

Left hand side of laptop

The right hand side has a combined audio port, HDMI, 2x USB-A 3.1 Gen 1, and 1 USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports. Some configurations also have a microSD card slot, but there isn’t one on my machine.

Right hand side of laptop

On the panel, there’s a common, low-resolution 0.9MP webcam. The image quality is nothing to write home about.

I have a Probook 445 G10 brand new in 2024 running Debian out of the box with no issues. So yours should do the same.
